Alisa Lim A Po

Alisa Lim A Po

Alisa Lim A Po (Amsterdam, 1975) is an independent visual artist. Her work reflects on various aspects of human behavior and emotions. She creates unique series of works from her personal experiences and views. Her art is characterized by a colorful signature and a skillful combination of different materials and techniques.

The artist’s oeuvre consists of unique, conceptual series. Working in series allows Lim A Po to venture beyond what is visible to the naked eye. She reflects on events from her own life and the world around her. With a sharp focus, she scrapes beneath the surface of the obvious and explores the vastness of human emotions and behavior. Each series is like a book, in which the individual works serve as separate chapters but are also unmistakably connected.

In her recent series Supernatural and Elements, Lim A Po refers to cherished feelings and moments of happiness. She translates these intimate feelings to her art, giving them a sense of time and place. Lim A Po works with acryl on various materials like canvas, paper, aluminum, and brass. The series Elements consists of organically shaped elements, in which the unity of shape and color plays a vital role. Associations with bloom and decay, the transience of beauty, and Lim A Po’s appreciation for nature arise intuitively.

Various galleries in both the Netherlands and abroad are representing Lim A Po.

In the series Supernatural Alisa Lim A Po relives cherished feelings and intimate moments of happiness. With this series of artworks, the artist translates these sentiments to time and place. She uses an organic visual language, in which associations with flourishing and decay, the transience of beauty, and her appreciation for nature arise naturally.

For this series Lim A Po translates cherished feelings and intimate moments of happiness into a larger context, to an essential and more generic imagery. This gives a certain anonymity with overall recognition.

With the series Lim A Po does not intend the work to be realistic or aim for true and faithful images. She tries to approach and revive some kind of feeling. An escape from, a visit, a memory of … quiet, reflective, meaningful and meaningless at the same time.

In this series, Lim A Po works with acrylic on various materials, such as linen, paper, aluminum, and brass. Through its combination of colors and layering, this series expresses a certain kindness that evokes associations with nature. At the same time Supernatural has a great abstraction through the lack of specific details and imagery. The playful act between surface, highlights, and lighting gives an additional edginess to the works, which contrasts with the organic visual language.

The artist thus creates a body of works subject to interpretation and introspection.
